Last Tuesday night saw seventeen "alumni" fashion designers being honored by Gen Art at the classic Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, LA. Hosted by the organization that has served as a springboard for emerging talent, the event was a kick-off to LA Fashion Week. I followed up with one of the designers, who helms an eco-friendly line made from vintage garments and fabrics. Los Angeles Fashion Week kicked off this past Thursday and Inhabitat was on site at an exclusive runway show, Fashionably Natural, that featured four of Los Angeles’ emerging eco-fashion designers. Hosted in collaboration with SOYJOY and nonprofit Gen Art, Fashionably Natural showcased the talent of Bridgid Cattis, Popomomo, The Battalion, and Velvet Leaf– making it Los Angeles’ largest collection of eco-fashion designers to hit the runway.

Eco style has never looked this good. Gen Art and SoyJoy’s “Fashionably Natural” show, hosted by Maggie Gyllenhaal, presented young, wearable lines that, for the most part, had little in common with the standard T-shirts one has come to expect from organic fashion. Brigid Catiis’ first collection was fun and flirty, as designer Raissa Gerona created a sexy Seventies vibe with easy one-shoulder tunics, minidresses and jumpers, with ruffled details and bell sleeves.

"From then, it was love," she explains. "More precisely, love for vintage clothing. It gives an amazing overview of the history of fashion and proves that it truly repeats and re-invents itself."

For Los Angeles label Brigid Catiis, recycled fabric is the future. Before the drawing board, designer Raissa Gerona starts at the rag house, where she sifts through thousands of pounds of fabric in the search of the perfect prints for her dresses. "The process is crazy, but there's value in having something that's one of a kind," she says. For next season, she’s created looks inspired by Annie Hall prep while maintaining a signature bohemian simplicity, letting the vintage fabrics tell their own story.
